It is so interesting reading of how far along other state's, such as Tennessee, are in regards to adopting online courses and virtual learning. Prior to this course, I thought Michigan was behind all other states as a result of the economy and how the educational system is portrayed to the public, and even their own employees!
In regards to the last scenarios and the reasoning behind virtual learning; being able to learn about concepts and content not accessible to those 5 years ago, is a dramatic improvement in the educational world! Additionally, the virtual learning forces students to seek professionals out for their assistance, which you mentioned! The skills used in seeking professionals are top priorities for employers when looking for future workers. Virtual learning allows students to leap in whatever direction they are interested in at an age where their mind is so creative with the ability to critically analyze subjects without misconceptions adults hold, yet the immense interest to fully learn about the concepts!
Katie I agree that this course has pointed out some valuable facts about online education especially letting us know that Michigan was the leading state in requiring students to have completed at least one online class before they graduate. We have gained a wealth of information to help us get a much clearer understanding of online education and I for one am very proud of how far we have come.

ReplyDeleteKatie, you make an excellent point about the process of online learning being a skill-building endeavor for students. Oftentimes, they (especially boys--it's a cultural/socialization thing) shy away from seeking help or even in some cases conversing with adults. If they don't learn how to communicate in those ways, it seriously hampers their ability to engage in the kinds of networking that are so critical to their later success in and after college. I always told my high school seniors that college will be what they make of it--that it's not enough to show up and make good grades anymore. This is becoming more and more true every year, and for Michigan to be moving students in such a positive direction is inspiring.
